How to Fix a Leaking Faucet in 5 Simple Steps
Why Fix a Leaky Faucet?
A single dripping faucet wastes thousands of gallons of water per year. Beyond the environmental impact, you'll see it immediately on your water bill. The good news: most leaks are caused by a simple worn washer or O-ring, and you can fix it yourself in under 30 minutes.
Tools You'll Need
- Adjustable wrench
- Screwdriver set (Phillips and flathead)
- Replacement washers and O-rings (cheap, sold in hardware store kits)
- Rag or towel
- Optional: faucet cartridge replacement kit for newer faucets
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Turn Off the Water
Look under the sink for two shutoff valves (one for hot water, one for cold). Turn both clockwise until they stop. Turn on the faucet to release any remaining water. If you can't find shutoff valves, you can turn off the main water supply, but shutoff valves are faster and easier.
Step 2: Disassemble the Faucet
Remove the decorative cap or handle (usually just pops off or unscrew). Then unscrew the packing nut holding the stem in place. Keep all pieces organized so you can reassemble them correctly.
Step 3: Replace the Washer
The worn washer is almost always the culprit. Remove the old washer from the stem and replace it with a new one from your kit. Make sure the new washer matches the size of the old one.
Step 4: Check the O-Rings
If the leak continues after replacing the washer, the O-rings may be worn. These are rubber rings that create a watertight seal. Replace them with new ones of the same size from your kit.
Step 5: Reassemble and Test
Put everything back together in reverse order. Turn the shutoff valves back on, and test the faucet. The leak should be completely gone.
When to Call a Professional
If the leak persists after replacing the washer and O-rings, the valve seat (the part the washer seals against) may be damaged. This requires more advanced tools and is a good time to call FixItCr.
